So You Think You Can't Make A Postbox Topper!

So You Think You Can't Make A Postbox Topper!

!!YES YOU CAN!!

Don't be intimidated by some of the fancy toppers you see on social media.  Anyone can create a stunning topper.  So, why not have a go at creating a topper for The Mail Trail for Hospiscare.

Let's start with the base.

Postbox Topper Base

For most postboxes the base is a simple circle with a vertical border and eyelets to thread a cord or cable ties through.
Most knitting and crochet patterns are written to work in the round (on double ended or circular needles, for knitting).  Here is a link to a basic knitting and crochet pattern for a standard (56cm) round topper:

WI - topper base patterns - UK crochet terms.

These can be adapted to different sized boxes, and the knitting pattern can be worked flat, if you're not comfortable with circular needles.

Here at, The Mail Trail for Hospiscare, we have a few spare bases if you don't feel ready to make one.  You could make items to go on a topper.

What Could I Make To Go On Top?

You can make pretty much anything you want to put on top of a postbox topper.  The theme for our summer 2025 Mail Trail is anything to do with the seaside, Jurassic coast or relevant to the communities served by Hospiscare.  For example: Birds and Animals, Sea Creatures, Beach Scenes, Flowers, Local Organisations, Teddy Bears Picnic and Afternoon Teas.  Have a look at our gallery to see examples of the toppers we have created previously.

I'm Not Sure I have the skills

Can you knit, crochet or sew a square?  If so, then you have the skills. Here are some things made from squares.  Regardless of whether the square was knitted, crocheted or sewn, the folding and sewing up is exactly the same.:

Knit A Square Bear
