Crafting Care – Knitters and Crocheters Unite for Hospiscare's Mail Trail

In just over four weeks, communities across Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh, Woodbury and Ottery St Mary will witness an explosion of colour, creativity, and compassion as the Mail Trail for Hospiscare comes to life. At its heart lies the humble postbox, transformed by the hands of extraordinary crafters into something truly spectacular. This is not just a project of yarn and stitches; it is a tapestry of stories, hopes, and love, woven together by a passionate group of knitters and crocheters.

The Artistry Behind the Toppers

Postbox toppers, those whimsical woollen works of art, have become a cherished hallmark of creativity in recent years. For the Mail Trail for Hospiscare, each topper represents far more than its aesthetic appeal. Every stitch, every loop of yarn carries a purpose: to support Hospiscare, a beloved local charity that provides vital care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses. For over 40 years, Hospiscare have provided compassionate care, including specialist palliative services, to patients and their families, ensuring that every day matters for those they help. Hospiscare relies on the generosity of the community, raising millions annually to continue their vital services.

From intricately detailed designs to playful themes that spark joy and nostalgia, these toppers celebrate community, creativity, and care. Behind each piece are crafters, young and old, pooling their talents to brighten streets and raise awareness.

Meet the Makers

The magic begins in bustling homes, cafes, community halls, and crafting circles where knitters and crocheters gather to bring their creations to life. Among the many talented individuals, there’s Lynn who enjoys singing with the Rock Choir, Line Dancing or looking after her 4 grandchildren; there’s Wendy, when not knitting or crocheting with the Exmouth Yarn-bombers, she enjoys playing her violin in the Exmouth Light Orchestra, playing tennis in the local leagues and gardening; and there’s Shelley, who is now making her fifth topper for Hospiscare. They come from different walks of life, but they’re united by a single purpose.

It's not just the knitters and crocheters who make the Mail Trail possible, its the wonderful Clare, who works tirelessly to encourage sponsors and co-ordinate the behind the scenes admin and social media, the other Clare - map maker extraordinaire, Toni and Haidee of Hospiscare - what don't they do!  Any many others, whose input is truly vital.

These talented individuals aren’t just artists; they’re also fundraisers, advocates, and cheerleaders for a cause close to their hearts. As the countdown to the launch continues, their homes and workshops hum with energy and camaraderie, their hands busy but their spirits soaring. For them, every hour spent crafting is an act of love and a way to honor Hospiscare's incredible work.

Be Part of the Story

The Mail Trail is as much about participation as it is about observation. Residents and visitors can follow the trail, marvel at the creativity on display, and be inspired by the passion of those who made it happen. Donations raised through the event, including map sales and sponsorships, will directly support Hospiscare's essential services.

To the knitters, crocheters, and everyone else, behind this initiative: your dedication is nothing short of extraordinary. You remind us all that, in every stitch and every smile, there lies the power to bring people together and make a difference.

Let’s celebrate these unsung heroes as they prepare to unveil their colourful tribute to community and care. Whether you’re a crafter yourself or simply an admirer, mark your calendar 22nd May 2025 – the Mail Trail awaits, and it promises to be unforgettable.
